The surya naam stotra glorifies the God Sun by various names. Lord Sun has been worshipped in every religion or cult from the beginning. Since the vedic times Aditya is God who has 12 forms which rules 12 months of years too. Read to know who is Aditya and his 12 forms? The Vedic God Aditya is Sun. This stotra/mantra is by Lord Brahma (the creator), mentioned in the sacred scriptures called “purana”. He has described the sun mantra/stotra to Rishi Yagyavalkya (Yajnavalkya). The Sun Stotra (Surya Naam Stotra)
नमः सूर्याय नित्याय रवये अर्काय भानवे।
भास्कराय मतङ्गाय मार्तण्डाय विवस्वते।।
Namah Suryaya Nityaaya Ravye Arkaaya Bhanve
Bhaskaraya Matangaya Martandaya Vivasvate
Salutations to the God Sun who is known as Nitya (Omnipresent), Ravi (Praised, skilled), Arka (crystal, flash of light), Bhanu (shining, light), Bhaskara(Fire, Gold, Bright), Matanga, Maartand and Vivasvaan.
आदित्यायादिदेवाय नमस्ते रश्मिमालिने।
दिवाकराय दीप्ताय अग्नये मिहिराय च।।
Adityaayaadidevaya Namaste Rashmimaaline
Divaakaraaya Diptaaya Agnye Mihiraaya Cha
I Salute to Lord Adityaya (son of devi aditi), Adideva (Aadi means beginning, first and deva means God), Rashmimali (lord of light), Divakar (who causes day), Dipta (illuminated), Agni (fire) and Mihir.
प्रभाकराय मित्राय नमस्ते अदितिसम्भव ।
नमो गोपतये नित्यं दिशां च पतये नमः ।।
Prabhaakaraaya Mitraaya Namaste Aditisambhav
Namo Gopatye Nityam Dishaam Cha Patye Namah
O son of Aditi, Lord Surya, You are Prabhakar, Mitra (friend), Gopati (the lord of rays), and Dikpati. I pay my salutations.
नमो धात्रे विधात्रे च अर्यम्णे वरुणाय च ।
पूष्णे भगाय मित्राय पर्जन्यायांशवे नमः ।।
Namo Dhaatre Vidhaatre Cha Aryamne Varunaaya Cha
Pushane Bhagaaya Mitraaya Parjanyaayaanshave Namah
I bow to the God who is named as Dhata, Vidhata, Aryama, Varuna, Poosha, Bhaga, Mitra, Parjanya and Anshumaan.
नमो हितकृते नित्यं धर्माय तपनाय च ।
हरये हरिताश्वाय विश्वस्य पतये नमः ।।
Namo Hitkrite Nityam Dharmaaya Tapnaaya Cha
Harye Haritaashvaaya Vishvasya Patye Namah
You are Hitkrit (the one who does good), Dharma, Tapan, Hari, Haritaashva (the one who has green horses), Vishvapati. I salute to the Lord Sun always and forever.
विष्णवे ब्रह्मणे नित्यं त्रयम्बकाय तथात्मने ।
नमस्ते सप्तलोकेश नमस्ते सप्तसप्तये ।।
Vishnave Brahmane Nityam Trayambakaaya Tathaatmane
Namaste Saptalokesh Namaste Saptasaptye
Salutations to Vishnu, Brahma, Trayambak (three-eyed shiva), Atmasvaroope, Saptasapti and saptalokesh.
एकस्मै हि नमस्तुभ्यं एकचक्ररथाय च ।
ज्योतिषां पतये नित्यं सर्वप्राणभृते नमः ।।
Eksmai Hi Namastubhyam Ekchakrarathaaya Cha
Jyotishaam Patye Nityam Sarvapraanabhrite Namah
Advitiya (noone else is like Him), Ekchakra Ratha (whose chariot has one wheel), Jyotishpati (the lord of all celestial beings), Sarvapranabrit (the one who nurtures all beings), I salute You.
हिताय सर्वभूतानां शिवायार्तिहराय च ।
नमः पद्मप्रबोधाय नमो वेदादिमूर्तये ।।
Hitaaya Sarvabhootaanaam Shivaayaarti Haraaya Cha
Namah Padmaprabodhaaya Namo Vedaadimurtaye
The one who cares for all, Shiva, Aartihar (destroyer of troubles, sadness), Padmaprabodha (in his presence lotus blooms), Vedaadimurti Lord Surya I bow to you.
काधिजाय नमस्तुभ्यं नमस्तारासुताय च ।
भीमजाय नमस्तुभ्यं पावकाय च वै नमः ।।
Kaadhijaaya Namastubhyam Namastaaraasutaaya Cha
Bhimajaaya Namastubhyam Paavakaaya Cha Vai Namah
O the son of Maharishi Kashyap, who is the Lord of Prajapatis, and Tara I salute you. Salutations to Bhimputra. O Pavaka I salute you.
धिषणाय नमो नित्यं नमः कृष्णाय नित्यदा
नमोस्त्वदिति पुत्राय नमो लक्ष्याय नित्यशः
Dhishanaaya Namo Nityam Namah Krishnaaya Nityadaa
Namostvaditiputraaya Namo Lakshyaaya Nityashah
Dhishna, Krishna, Aditi putra (Son of Aditi) and the one who is named Lakshya, I salute to Lord Surya.
Benefits
- Lord Brahma said that one who chants the stotra at the time of morning and evening, his wishes will be granted.
- By worshipping Lord Sun by this Surya Naam Stotra one will accomplish the Dharma, Kama and Artha. Which means that he will be able earn good, fulfill his wishes and be able to complete his duties for family and world.
- Lord Sun bestows good health if one chants the mantra/stotra.
- The sun mantra is giver of power, authority and victory.
- If one is caught up in any difficult situation, remembering the surya naam stotra will release Him.
- The chanting of this stotra also destroys the bad karmas.
- The stotra is a guide. If one is facing confusion, fogginess in thoughts that will be cleared.
- The stotra increases the will power and release the depression.
- It is the giver of name and fame.
